When I moved to London I promised myself that the sacrifice I made on space (small one bedroom flat) would be made up by surrounding myself in culture, interesting places and good food. A subscription to Time Out seemed like a good idea.

After a while like all good resolutions, life (work) gets in the way and the magazines started piling up, unopened. Time to cancel…

So if I print out the email and post it to you that’s acceptable is it?

Is this part of your progressive environmental policy, or just a way of making it more difficult to cancel my subscription?

Okay so you caught me.

I actually have a diagnosed psychological condition – it’s called Medorthophobia, I have a fear of pens and it makes it difficult for me to write letters.

Considering my condition, please can you unsubscribe me?

Dear Mr Brush,

Or may I all you Duncan?

Duncan,

Yet again you’ve caught me out… or have you?

This is almost like an episode of Scooby Doo… so let’s pretend I’m Velma and your the ‘caretaker’ of this haunted theme park.

Let’s analyse the clues:

1) I didn’t type that letter, DO YOU THINK I WOULD CHOOSE SUCH OFFENSIVE NOTLET TO TYPE ON?

2) All my correspondence is sent by dictation to Bangalore, which is in turn transcribed by my P.A. Ramesh and sent to you by email.

Can you see what a detrimental affect having a fear of pens is having on my life?

I could of course ask my P.A. in Bangalore to send you a letter, however I suspect with the Indian post being the way it is, it might take longer to get to you than my subscription is actually valid for. Then we would end up in this mess again wouldn’t we?

3) You said in point 3 below that you are declining to cancel my subscription by email. To me this means that you do actually have the ability to cancel my subscription by email. If you decline then you also have the option to accept, do you not?

Given my extenuating circumstances, I’m sure you would agree that ‘accepting’ my cancellation by email is the right thing to do?

All the best.

Rob (and Ramesh!)

P.S. Would photos of me dressed as Velma from Scooby Doo swing it?

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

At Wired Canvas we decided we wanted to go all out festive this year for our Christmas Card, so we donned Santa hats, tinsel and festive knitwear and had a quick photoshoot. Lucky people who get to have a picture of us on their mantelpieces this Christmas – we’re almost jealous! Needless to say we have realised that we are naturals in front of the camera and will be venturing into the world of catwalk modelling in 2012.

America’s Next Top Model, eat your heart out…

Basically it’s awarded to the person that has made the most (non-job threatening) mistakes in the year. It truly is an international company competition and anyone on four continents is eligible to win it.

Since 2006 we’ve produced the certificates for the winners.

This year Jim won for a string of mishaps:

Anybody who has followed the Wired Canvas blog will know that we are pretty fond of mugs. So you will know how delighted we were to receive a new mug delivery today! We pimped up our existing mug designs a little bit – via some random doodlings…

The Bootsydillo Mug – by Rob:

Rob decided to channel the spirit of Bootsy Collins and opted for a funk-influenced avant-garde approach, even going so far as to include some Funkadelic lyrics:

Meanwhile…

The Spectacled Bear Mug – by Alice:

Alice (that would be me) opted for a somewhat ‘busier’ approach with lots of random doodlings influenced by day-to-day life at Wired Canvas. References to: the fly infestation / electric fly swats / cake / tea / Movember / books / stationery / music (the cassette is merely symbolic) / the office mouse / biscuits / jaffa cakes / brochures… to name but a few.

Here are some images of the arrival of the new mugs…

If you are one of the many many people who have literally begged us for a mug in the past few months (you know who you are!) – keep an eye out!

Aaaaand we’re live! Unfortunately, as is probably the curse of many web designers, finding the time to actually build your own website is much trickier than you’d like to think – since you always end up prioritising your clients work. Our old website was built by Rob in a weekend, many moons ago, so it was high time it had a facelift.

We did photoshoots in parks, drew plenty of brains / wrestlers / sharks / hoovers, used a vintage Rolleicord for lots of the portfolio images, spent a long time brainstorming taglines and ate a lot of cake in between. The launch might have overrun a tad, but what you’re looking at is our brand spanking new site in all it’s glory!

A few new or refreshed features that you might notice (or recognise!) include:

New footer illustrations/taglines*

Our hilarious comedy copywriting skills. Ahem.

Lots of new things in the portfolio; we have narrowed it down to just a handful of our favourite pieces and re-organised everything by client so it’s hopefully easier to browse through

Approximately 30% added jaffa cakes

“What we do“; because we know you’re desperate to know more about “behind the scenes” at WC

Added shop, for all your kitchenware needs

Updated Blog – we’ve taken all the old blog-posts from our old website, given them a makeover… and promise we will start blogging again soon!

The site is running in WordPress, an open-source CMS system that we have a bit of a crush on. It makes it really easy to update content, in particular blogging, so we have no excuse not to blog more often. If you’d like to be kept up to date, you could always subscribe to the RSS feed.

Finally, and most importantly, there’s lots of photos of our lovely faces for you to enjoy – evidently we are both naturals in front of the lens…

* We don’t want to give anything away but *nudge nudge wink wink* the straplines are very ‘clickable’, some might say…

It was whilst working on our rebrand that I questioned who we are as a company and what direction we should be taking. What clients should we work for? What style of design should we focus on?

It’s easy when you work in the design industry to focus on design itself and not actually consider who you work for, or what they do.

The competition to be at the cutting edge of the web, or to produce something that is brilliantly designed seems to have replaced the need to consider why we are doing it? Are we all just chasing the kudos of our peers?

Are your clients your achievement? Do you wear them like badges of honour? Lots of companies seem to.

Does this make a difference? Why do we design? To communicate a message clearly, visually? There are a lot of amazing designers out there that produce their own work, which communicates messages that mean something.

But what about when designers work for other businesses or organisations? You’re then communicating their message. Is it time to have a think about who they are as clients?

If you are their mouth piece are you happy with what they do?

Do they give something back?

The words of Neville Brody are perhaps more eloquent than mine:

Radical Culture and the idea that the work you do as a designer could actually be of benefit to society is no longer evident. When did you last hear the word ‘progress’ ? Progress is essential to society; the idea that what you’re doing now should make a better society for tomorrow. [Good Design] is not about doing something that’s going to bring in money, it’s about doing something that’s going to re-engage people, re-engage culture and society and re-engage possibility.

- Neville Brody
